A little celtitude…
From the Mask of Tarbes to Astérix, a few centuries were passed, the Celts made much speak about them but they preserved their mystery.
Would they be at the origin of alignments of Carnac or Stonehenge?
Although their origin is mysterious, these monuments are former on arrival of the Celts in Celtic territory. However, this mystery siérait rather well with the Celtic worship. It was actually established that their religion had a mystical and superhuman dimension which explains the nonfigurative characteristics their religious sculptures.
It is them our Gallic ancestors… with their force and their weaknesses.
These tribes, arrivals of Balkans, occupied all current Europe, 1000 years before our era.
Grousers, quarrellers, these Gallic did not know to get along between them to link itself against their enemies, the Romans, some 50 years before J.C.
However, their force comes from their religious convictions. The druid, priest, doctor and born leader all at the same time is the bond uncontested between all these men independent with the direction even of “religo” = to connect.
Also, to weaken these hard warriors, César attacked itself by all the means with the Celtic religious symbols. The Gallic gods were compared to the Roman gods and the prohibited rites druidic.
End of the Gallic one.
Thus in year 58 in Alesia, César subjected Vercingétorix and that people lost its heart but reappeared rich of the Celtic and Roman contributions.
It illustrates well one of the features characteristic of the Celtic people: love of the family.
Gaulle seemed entirely pacified. However, of the sporadic revolts burst. One of them, in which certain Sabinus took part, prefect of a troop of Lingons into Germanic, failed and Sabinus had to remain hidden in an underground during 9 years, maintained in life thanks to Eponine, his wife, of which it had 2 children. Discovered and condemned by the Vespasien emperor, it could not be saved by supplications of his wife, in spite of the emotion which their love caused. The emperor granted the grace to them to die together and sent two foreign ground wire.
If the Gallic ones are famous to be skilful technicians - César described them as “a race of an extreme ingeniousness” they also left decorative reasons which will be later at the origin of a whole series of geometrical decorative reasons:
The swatiska or other ornaments out of keys or Greek crosses could reproduce on the vertical axis,
the solstice, and on the horizontal axis, the equinox.
The circle, and more particularly the spiral or the double spiral, are at the base of the Celtic artistic representations, as well on the jewels as the weapons or in ornamentation surrounding of other figures. There one could detect the symbol, shared enough by other people, image of the alternate rate/rhythm of the evolution and involution, birth and death.
The triskèle, or triskell, or triscèle are the most known figure. The populations of the megaliths already employed it like ornament. The word comes from the meaning Greek triskeles to three legs. Interpretations about it vary. Some see there the representation of the sun and the movement, others that of the representation of the 3 symbols, the air, water and the ground. This triskèle would have a positive or negative significance according to whether it turns on the right or left.
Today, it is inseparable from any Celtic reference and one finds it in Brittany in archicture and the decoration of the rustic pieces of furniture. To follow ..... Lilian Munoz
